Default keyless entry question for newbie

So I just bought my first car, a 99' Honda Accord EX. I have a question about the keyless entry. The trunk release rarely works, but the unlock and lock do. I would like to fix this. How can I tell if it is an issue with the remote or with the trunk release or something?

the oem keyless entry and alarms r very burdensome. i dont think honda knows how to work on their own systems. i have a viper aftermarket. directed electronics makes it here is their site. www.directed.com. take your car to a decent alarm co to install it. hondas unlike say GMs require cutting into the wiring to install alarms. gms come with the available wiring harness tucked away.
