I love my 96 Accord
Hi, I'm new to this forum.
I drive a 1996 5-speed manual Honda Accord LX. I bought it two years ago off a guy for $2500. I replaced the tape deck with a Sony Xplod CD/mp3 deck. This car is the greatest thing ever. I use it as my de-stressing zone. It uses practically no gas, so whenever I need to unwind or chill I take a drive around Dallas, hop on highway 75 and just cruise. The audio system is PERFECT. Stock audio system. I play mainly trance and classic rock on it, and with the deck it sounds crystal clear and amazing. I can't even begin to describe how great I feel in this car. It hugs the road like a dream. I feel like I'm part of the car while I'm driving it. I always leave my windows down and let the wind stream through my baby as I hit 80, 90, then 100 and hear the roar of my engine drowned out by the loud glory that is DJ Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren. My friend Russel and I have a tradition that I don't think anyone else I know does - every friday night we burn a new mix of trance and just drive. We don't hit up clubs, we don't go drink or get high. We grab a cigar and a CD and drive from about 10:00 pm to 5:00 am. I'll be out that early in the morning, zooming around highway 121 or highway 75 at 80-90 mph, watching the clouds shift from dark to that awesome blue-gray they do right before the sun rises, with the wind in my face. I've driven in rainstorms just for the excitement. I taken it out and "drifted" when my street was iced over (it's front wheel drive, I have to get my fun any way possible ^_^).
I worked and worked and worked for 3 years to save up for this car. I busted my rear doing several different jobs, and I have to say, the time and effort and blood and sweat were well worth it.
And the coolest thing about my Accord? When I started driving it I knew next to nothing about cars. Now, after two years of standard maintenance (that I do myself) and replacing things like two windows, a windshield, and a broken axel (these were on the car when I got it) and an exploded radiator (it cracked when I was being an idiot and bottomed out) I know how to take care of a car myself. I learned how to change oil without taking it to an expensive shop, fix a flat, change a radiator, install windows, fix speakers, rewire, change batteries, change all my fluids, flush my engine, reattach a bumper (funny story involving my dog and a steak I was throwing around in my front yard near my car), fix headlights, install a stereo deck, replace a shifter knob, install an airbag, all by just doing it myself. The accord is such an easy car to fix and maintain because everything is nice and loose; you can reach all the parts without needing an expensive tool or a shrinking ray ... I keep that car held together with a philips and flathead screwdriver and a ratchet with 10mm and 6mm heads. I'm not a modder, by no means. My Accord is pure stock and I wouldn't have it any other way. I just maintain it. I replace all the old parts (theyve been on there for 10 years and still work wonderfully) with new ones, and just fix it up. I'm installing a leather interior at the moment.
I love racing in it (I race other "slow" cars) but even though it isn't the fastest car I've ever driven (my parents gave me the choice of getting their 1998 automatic lexus GS 300, which I drove for a year before getting enough money, or buying my own car...and I'm glad I worked up the pride and cojones to get my own) its handling and its raw feel of acceleration, especially in 2nd and 3rd gears, get my adrenaline pounding every time I get behind the wheel.
This car has 211,000 miles on it. 211,000! It still runs like a new car! We've had suburbans and trucks and old camrys that have fallen apart after 150,000, and mine will probably run until 300000.
This car is godly. I'm glad I've found a place where I can express my love for it. There really is no experience like it. It's no race car, nor is it the most decked-out, fully-option-loaded thing on the road. It's not even an expensive trendy car.
But it's MY car. and I love it more than anything in the world.
My name is James, and I am one of the most enthusiastic owners of the 1996 Accord (which I have heard has been praised by a lot of owners as the best car theyve ever owned ... i know a guy who owned one and traded it in to buy a BMW ... and he said he missed the accord much more than he enjoyed the beemer) that ever lived on this planet.

That's quite an autobiography. But it's good to hear you like your 'cord. When I decided to retire my '93 Accord I test drove a ford focus, chevy malibu, toyota camry, BMW 320i, dodge stratus, dodge intrepid, toyota corolla, honda civic, mitsubishi galant, mistubishi eclipse, hyundai elantra (what a joke), nissan altima, nissan maxima, mazda 626, mazda 6, mazda 3, and a host of other cars before I finally broke down and came to the conclusion that the Accord is the car of the Gods. I drive a '99 Accord now.

i testdrove my friend's 2001 civic EX...it was really nice...but its handling is a lot rougher than my accord. as for nissan altima/maxima they're good cars but they don't really have the performance. Don't even get me started on mitsubishi eclipses....those are 10 pounds of crap in a 2 pound bag. I checked out the VW Gti...it's really nice...but overall none of them ride quite like my accord. what a great vehicle.

You didn't like the nissan's huh? I liked the guts of the maxima, and my wife's '94 Altima has a 2.4 DOHC 150HP engine. It hauls. The thing I don't like is the mileage. Mileage kinda bites on the nissans in my experience. But all the one's I've driven were auto's. Manuals might be better.
