98 AccordLX 4cyl: Power steering noise
My 1998 Accord LX coupe 4cyl, 119K miles developed a whine noise from the power steering system that develops after 40-50 mins on the road, at low speed/rpm and when the wheel is turned it gets louder. The power steering works fine.
Fluid was a little low, but no noticeable leaks. Hoses replaced by independent shop (do not trust my local Honda dealer, but that's another story...), but the problem still happened.
Had the P/S pump replaced this morning, and while driving into work, right on schedule...the noise was back. My mechanic is honestly stumped, and I'd like to avoid going to the dealer.
Suggestions? Ideas? HELPPPPP!

Well your independant shop has just thrown parts at a problem they apparently never properly did troubleshooting for, maybe you should have gone to a Honda dealer.
Power steering noises can also be an indication of worn suspension components, such as the tie rod arms. You can check if they're worn by getting under the vehicle and trying to wiggle them...if you can wiggle them fairly easily, they need to be replaced. That worn ball joint may be causing a vibrational noise.
Also, a component inside the gear box could be worn or damaged.
Questions:
1) Does it happen when at idle without turning the steering wheel?
2) Has anyone tried to locate where the noise is coming from?
3) Does it only happen when the car is in gear?
4) Why did you/your mechanic think it had to do with the power steering system?
