Default 03 Accord LX transmission flush?

Hi all, I have a 03 Accord LX. Its at 55k right now. My local Midas recommends a transmission flush. Should I go to my dealer to do it? Is transmission flush included in 60k mile service, or is it extra?

Thanks all.
Dave

Hi Dave,

As many posts on this forum already indicate, Honda does NOT recommend using "flush" in their transmissions - rather, you should "fill and drain". Also, you should use ONLY HONDA ATF (Automatic Transmissio Fluid). If you use any other fluid your tranny may suffer and/or fail. Honda ATF has special additivies relevant to Honda transmissions.

You only have 55k. Take your car to HONDA DEALER and do "drain and fill" ATF fluid change. In my area it is about $60 (all included - fluid and work). From here on I would do it every 20,000 miles or so.

I would NOT use any other fluid other then HONDA's and I would let dealer do this and NOT Midas or anybody else.

Regards

Yeah only use HONDA ATF (Z1) it has some special stuff in it and is less harsh on the tranny.

like mentioned ...

1. never flush a transmission. The bottom of the transmission housing contains many pieces of shaved metal and bits. When you flush, those unwanted pieces get washed back into the gears.

2. Only use genuine Honda branded transmission fluid.

3. To properly change all transmission fluid, drain 3 quarts and fill 3 quarts. Drive for a week, drain 3 quarts, fill 3 quarts.

Remove the word "flush" from your vocabulary when it comes to Accord trannies. Use only Honda ATF fluid. Period.

is there any proof that Honda ATF is so special? I mean, of course they're going to tell you to use it because they make money... they'll also tell you to use their oil filters... tires from them... brake pads from them... etc.

I would really like to see proof that their fluid is special.

I can't tell you exactly what it is, but when you buy brand name ATF, it'll mention that it is not for Honda cars on the label. This also goes for power steering fluid.

There's something in it, but I have no idea.
