Default 02 Accord Special edition Key problem.

Okay since my '95 accord v6 just wrecked , total lost so said goodbye to that car and bought myself an 02 accord special edition (2doors), but so far i'm having a bit trouble with the key. i bought the car from the dealer, and he only gave me 1 key, and it wasn't even a HONDA key, it was some aftermarket key. so I went to make duplicate for that key, and it wouldn't work. the new key can only open door, ignition the power for the car (like turn on radio) but it would not let me turn on the engine. so mayb it has an electronic chip in it? Now i went to a Local HOnda Dealer, they said it would cost me around $170 to get another copy of my car key and they also said that my car key is weird because they have NOT SEEN any aftermarket honda key that has electronic chip in it but they weren't so sure if it has chip in it. So now what? how do i make copy of that key? or to verify if it has chip in it or not?

The 6th gen key has the chip in it. Most aftermarket keys have the chip installed which needs to be programmed from the dealership.

Go back to the dealer again and tell them to give you a Genuine honda key, if they dont then call the honda customer service. They should provide you 2 keys atleast.

You can also buy an uncut ket from Ebay and get it programmed.

The Original key if you had one can be cloned as many times as you like. The aftermarket ones (probably an Ilco) Cannot be cloned. So you need a new key and it needs to be programmed into the system. Unfortunately the only way to do this is with a Honda scanner and obtaining the proper passwords for your system.

I agree. If the aftermarket key can start your car, its clone-able as
long as the dealer has a T5 cloner. But even if no dealer in your area
offer the clone, $170 is more then double what they should
charge.

actually any locksmith with a ilco T5 immobilizer key copier can do it most honda dealers here can do a T5 copy for $25 some locksmith with the T-code machine can rewrite new keys and delete lost keys from your car.

I had to get new keys as the only key when I bought my 98 coupe was the valet key. I guess I got off pretty light compared to what you guys are saying, I "only" paid $49 per key at the stealership.
