Default 94 Accord EX starter problem

Having a starting problem with my 94 Accord Ex. It will start about one in every five to ten tries. The other times I get a single click. Tried replacing the battery but to no avail. Doesn't seem to be a battery problem cause the batt is holding a charge fine.
Also one time I got a single click then no power anywhere. No dash lights, headlights, nothing. When I tried jumping it, it wanted to start by itself, no keys in the ignition. Buddy of mine said it could be a problem with the ground but I can't trace the ground far enough to check it out. Ant ideas would be appreciated. I am dead broke and would like to resolve this as cheaply as possible.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the info OHS. I have tried cleaning the connections on both the battery and the starter. The positive connection on the starter looks A-1 as does the ground. The boot on the ground is a little cracked but the crimp itself looks good.
The battery terminals were pretty oxidized and I have cleaned then up as well. The only thing I can't access is the other end of the ground for the starter. Where is it?
After doing all this the car started three or four times without a problem then back to the click. Still sarts about every five or so tries. A couple of times there was a "tock" after the "tick" when I released the key, but not again since.

is it an automatic? if so i have a perfectly working starter off a 94 EX auto that i can sell for cheap to check if its your starter.

now when you changed the battery does the new battery still hold a charge? if not it maybe the alternator.

I would have said it's just the starter going back and getting stuck. But I just figure if the battery is good, and the car won't start, that it must be the starter not working properly.

definitely a loose connection somewhere, as you mention the lights and everything else quitting one time. The ground on the motor is mounted to a plate underneath the starter... not super easy to get to.

thanks all. I think I might have to break down and actually take it to someone to be fixed. I am at a lack of tools to top it all off. Thanks for the suggestions
