From my experience a bad wheel bearing is more of a humming noise, and braking won't get rid of it, it'll just get quieter as the car slows down.
I had bad rear bearings and they started squealing like crazy - when I would brake the noise would go away and the noise wasn't constant just like he says. I suppose you might not notice the humming stage if you have crappy tires.

The first thing would be to look for the pads as John said...there are instructions in the FAQ for it. If they're not down to metal on metal and you don't need new rotors too, it could be the bearings or the dust shield rubbing against the disc/wheel.
