Default 1996 Accord LX: Speedometer doesn't work

Recently, my speedometer hasn't been working right. It either shows the correct speed or stays at 0. I noticed something in another thread that if the speed sensor went bad, the check engine light should go on, but mine hasn't gone on. I took it to the local car shop for an estimate and they told me the sensor and cluster both went bad and repair would be about $400 with labor. I'd rather not spend the $400 and see if I can buy the parts and do it myself.

What should I do first and where should I buy the parts?

Thanks,
Chris

The first thing is start driving with traffic. That way you know that you are not speeding. You would probably end up with a speeding, and operating unsafe vehicle tickets. As for how to fix it, wait for someone that knows what they are talking about tell ya.

I have a problem with speed sensor on my Civic(there is a thread in Civics).
I noticed that it shifts gears late. Sometimes converter doesn't lock. If tranny acts like usuall than you VSS is OK. I got VSS at junk yard for $30.00(didn't install yet) and you can get cluster for $80-100. Try spedometer first. There is no way you should pay $400.00.

Right the CEC would be on if the VSS was bad. I would say the shop is guessing by telling you its both since they aren't 100 % sure.

So if the lights not on, then what do you suggest I do? Buy a new speedometer? If so, where online or instore can I get one?

If CEL isn't on it is not VSS or its connection.

Just because the CEL light isn't on doesn't mean it's good. CEL's aren't suppose to turn on for everything. OBD2 CEL's come on only if the tailpipe emissions exceed 1.5 times the federal test standard.
The VSS is probably faulty... It's a common problem on Accords. Just replace it already.
