Default gear shift problem

i have a 92 accord
i have an automatic transmition
i recently installed my car audio and while doign so, to get the ashtray holder out, the center console must be remove because i didnt have any angles screwdrivers to get at those screws
to get the center console out i had to take off the top of the gear shifter
when the system was done and evrythign was back together i found this spring, it was black and about 1-1.5 inches long and abotu 1 cm wide (girth, lol)
and i put it somewhere cause neither me or my friend that helped me install it knew where it came from, and now i cant find it
now when i go from park to reverse or whatever gear i chose it makes a noise when the button is pushed in and it doesnt lock into gears
is this spring from the gear shifter?
and if it is, is that whut is causing this problem?

im assuming it is the spring for the button?

without the spring to pop the button out, you are free to slid the shifter into anything you want...so id suggest to get another spring.
