it means the body style. the accord that is currently avaliable in the honda dealership is the 7th generation accord that honda has made. 98-02 is the 6th accord body style honda has made. when the next accord body style comes out it will be an 8th gen accord.

They all had different engine and trim levels available. Honda makes aesthetic changes to the gen about every 2 years. for example, a 94-95 accord is slightly different than a 96-97 even though they are both 5th gens.
