When should I change Timing Belt?

Default When should I change Timing Belt?

My milage is around 50,000 right now. I mostly drive in the city. My 99 honda Accord runs pretty good but at the dealership where i go for the service told me that at 60,000 miles I need to change the timing belt and some other stuff related to timing belt and gave me the price about $700. Should I trust him? As far as I know the timing belt should go up to 100,000 miles without any hasseles. Can somoneone help me with this please????

According to Honda, 105000. Change the water pump and the the other belt, I think it's the balence shaft belt, at the same time. I changed mine at 113000, and there was very little stretching on the original belt.

Yeah, if its a 4cyl change it at 105k miles. Other people do it very early, but thats just a total waste of a lot of money.

I would not worry about it till you hit 99,000. Hondas are built to last. That is, unless you run the heck out of it. I also would recomend you get a pro to do it. Usally costs about $300 if you look around. That includs the belt, water pump, and labor.

lol, 300 bux? dont lie to the man. Be prepaired to spend about 500 dollars, give or take 50 bux.

Yeah... I've got all the parts (bought aftermarket OEM spec parts, total was like $140 for the kit and the tensioner..) I still haven't gotten around to the other $250 needed to get them properly installed.

I have to slightly disagree with the group. While you can definitely wait until 90-100+K miles, it is typical to change the timing belt at 60k. Once the timing belt is off, it's easy to do the water pump and drive belt at the same time. If you chance it on the timing belt and it breaks, you can do some serious damage to your engine or even kill it all together. I just changed the belts and my V-6 was just over 60k. Admittedly, it could have gone over 60k, but I am no gambler and did not want to risk engine damage. I paid about $600, but later found out that a friend of a friend could have done it for half.

Honda says: 60K miles for "severe conditions", 105K for "normal" conditions.

I don't plan on doing mine until over 100K miles.

96 and down 60k, 97 and up 90k. You can wait if you want but be safe about it.
