Good reading...
I picked up a book at advance auto parts today... its a Haynes book, but specifically for "Sport Compact Performance". A TON of useful info for DIYers, as well as the filthy rich that can pay to have everything done. It covers pretty much anything dealing with the motor, and optimizing it for power and doing it all right. Even down to the drivetrain and making it look all pretty.
I definatly recomend it to anyone that wants more power, but dosent really know where to start... or what the options are. They have others ones as well, for other types of modifications. It was $25, but the whole book has color photos and alot of how-to information.

It does have alot of valuable info, especially for someone just starting out in the sport compact scene, or just someone that dosent really know that much about their car and wants to learn a little. They go into alot of detail about motors, the internals, turbo, supercharging, nitrous... I think its a good book. The price is kinda high though, but what isnt expensive today.

oh yeah... it also covers computers (ECU), ignition, fuel, intake and exhaust (how-tos for first time DIYers), and some brief info on swaps. Where I bought the book there was one out of the plastic, so I looked through it quick before buying.
