87' Accord very low MPG
Hi Everybody,
I bought a 87 accord a week ago. My car gives very low miles per gallon, it gave me 11.89 miles/gallon. Average weather condition was -15F during the week. When i park the car overnight i see the snow under the left rear tire turns yellow in color. This was seen prominent the next day after i filled up my gas tank. I suspect a leakage in the gas hose to the tank, how could i check that? .. What other problems may cause such low mileage/gallon? What should i check. I am a new user, please help me.
I would also like to know what engine oil, transmission oil and antifreeze it would be good to use in such a old car. I read the manual all it says use genuine Honda fluids for everything. I would appreciate your advice.

Perhaps if the car isn't warming up it'll give you poor gas mileage. As far as the spot under the left rear, you could have a fuel leak (which I'd be wary of). Try (even tho its -15 out) getting into a garage and taking off the left rear wheel. See if there's a rust spot on the fuel filler pipe and also take note if there's a smell of gasoline. A car that's 15 years old is bound to have problems. Call the people you bought the car from and ask them if they know of any sort of mileage problems or fuel leaks (this may be what prompted them to sell the car, afterall).
A new air filter always helps. Fuel injector cleaner is a good thing to help gas mileage. Tires are another thing as well. Your tires need to be at proper inflation in order for your gas mileage to do better as well. In terms of the yellow spillage there probably is a leak somewhere and the only way to find out is to get underneath the car and look. It could be the tank, hoses, connections, etc...
Good Luck!
Good Luck!
Thanks for your help....Due to cold weather i decided to get it checked by a professional for gas leak. I was told there was no leak with my gas tank filled only 50%. The leak seemed to be at the top part of the tank. So i am running the car at 50% gas tank level. However i did change the airfilter and also made sure the tires are inflated properly. The mileage is up at 15.
Far as I know.. leaking gas tank is really dangerous..
I also need new gas tank too. I don't have leak.. but
inside of gas tank has dividers to make the gas reading
accurate.. Must of been one of the divider is broken...
So right now I have jumping gas gauge..
I replace the gauge.. / check Fuel Sending unit.. and
final result conclued to gas tank..
Any way gas warning light works.. so no big deal for me..
Go to junk yard and find one.. for $20.. w/o
fuel pump and fuel sending unit..
