First of, it'll help to know what type/year car it is...

WTF is a fuel emission filter?? I've heard of fuel filters but never a fuel emission filter.

I can tell you that the fuel filters on a 6th gen. do not need to be replaced because they are inside the tank. you can't access them unless you remove the tank, etc.

the car is a 99 accord I4 auto.... he just bought it used and the maintainence light lit up... mechanic told him that the fuel emission filter needs to be changed... i was confused cos i never heard of it...

anyways, my friend called the mechanic again and the guy said that the fuel emission filter is "a vent shut valve used to recycle back into the intake manifold "...those r the exact words used by the mechanic... i was WTF?? the only thing i can think of is the sensors in the intake manifold... wat do u guys think?

he is probably looking to get some money out of it, go to a mechanic u trust. and why would take a car to the mechanic because of the maintainence light ? this is just to remind you of checking or doing regular maintance stuff like oil, change tune up etc...
how many miles the accord has?

What you are describing is the EGR valve.

well if it is the "Maintenance Required" light, the amber thing toward the bottom left of the dash cluster, you can just reset it if the car has been maintained. If you do routine maintenance on the car, then just reset the light. Without putting the key into the ignition, hold down the milage/trip reset button and while holding it down, place the key into the ignition and turn it to On/ACC but do not start the car, after a few seconds the light should go off. I think it's somewhere like 5 seconds or so.

Man, I just posted something about this. It's not the EGR...

The EVAP system on 6th-gen Accords is mostly down under the car, about underneath the left-rear seat. There's a charcoal canister, a 'Vent-Shut valve' (gee, how bout that), and a small filter. It's not too difficult to replace, but kinda awkward without much room for your hands & tools.

If your mechanic hasn't already gone thru checking the different parts of that system, the check-engine light won't tell him which part of that system is bad.

Check this out...

Well, if he has someone read the CEL code, & it actually turns out to be P1457, then that's the story. I never knew there was a filter down there until I had to check it out. My Helm book says '98 & '99 so they must be the same.

If it's actually the 'maintenance light' like he said, well then I'm gonna look kinda stupid...
