Sounds like the brake interlock. There's a switch at your brake pedal, wired into a solenoid at the shifter. You have to stand on the brakes in order to shift out of park. So if the switch is busted, wiring is flaky, or the solenoid is bad, it won't shift. Get your DMM & look for that switch.

DMM = digital multi-meter. If you're comfortable messing with wiring & troubleshooting, you can deal with it. But if you don't know what a DMM is, well....

That clicking noise would be the solenoid unlocking the shift lever, or trying to unlock it. You'll have to take apart the consile trim stuff to get at it. Since it clicks, then I suppose the switch at the brake pedal is OK, along with the wiring. Maybe the solenoid isn't working right, or the latch mechanism is stuck somehow? Mine hasn't screwed up, so that's about as much as I can tell you.

could be the interlock control assembly or the shift lock solenoid... it sounds like you have some electrical issues going on though.... I hate to say this but if you just bought the car, did you get any kind of vehicle history report on it... it's a stretch but do you have any other weird electrical issues or moisture anywhere like head/tail lights? It just seems weird that your headlights would play into the mix
