Get the Asus A7V8X-X motherboard, its got very good reviews and has a lot of potential.
For some reason, I want to build a P4 system, rather than an AMD one. I've seen a lot of benchmarks that put the Intels ahead despite the AMD's claims. Maybe someday I'll do an AMD system, but not right now.

don't skimp on teh graphics card...
It's ATI's most powerful card and still costs around $380, I'm not really skimping, just not buying the absolutely top the of the line.

the 9800Pro is the best one available right now, but I'd wait for the 256MB one (I am).
Actually, I think the Nvidea 5900 Ultra 256Meg is king right now. The 9800 Pro 256 is out (they're both around $500) but according ot the benchmarks and tests, unless your running newer games at insanely high resolutions (1600x1200 or more), your not going to see any extra performance. Games just aren't out yet that that are optimized for such large memory and by the time they are, a 5900 ultra or 9800 Pro is going to be old news in grahpics cards.

If you can't tell, I've been reading a lot of toms hardware. I think I've been doing more reseach on this computer then I ever did in college.
