You could check spark timing, too. That's not the same as valve time. New spark plugs; clean/inspect/replace plug wires, distributor cap & rotor. That's normal tune-up stuff for any car.
I don't know how your engine compartment looks, but maybe(?) stuff like replacing old vacuum hoses, cleaning your throttle body, new air filter...
If it's been a while, consider changing/flushing your anti-freeze and your brake fluid. Check out your owners manual for mileage intervals for everything. Have you had it forever or do you know the history for maintenance?
The manual shows how to do all that stuff. The basic specs are just the first few pages anyway. The best manual is Helm.

Haynes or Chilton books are cheaper, not as good, but for basic stuff are probably OK.
