If I had a choice between a townhouse/condo or a house I would buy a house. You get more for your money and your investment is better. I used to live in a townhouse and it sucked due to neighbors. Owning a house at least you have some boundaries around your home - plus having a two car garage is nice Mowing the lawn sucks though!
