Default Counter Act electronic rust prevention.

Saw this on 2 guys garage last night. Supposedly it sends a negative charge thru the chassis, preventing rust and stopping formed rust spots from getting any bigger. For $200 I'm considering it. thoughts/opinions??

Dude.... screw that... DIY.... do like they do on fishing boats. Get a block of zinc and ground it on your car's body. It'll do the exact same thing. It creates a galvanic effect and so the zinc block will rust first. You just need to make sure that the ground to the zinc block is good by cleaning it once in a while. What I did is I have the block in a small plastic box in the trunk with a large 4 GA ground wire running through the plastic box to the car's chassis. This will keep all the zinc oxide dust contained in the box so it doesn't go all over your trunk.

Oh.. I forgot... total cost 20$

10$ for the zinc block (any machine shop or even a boating supply store)
5$ for the plastic box to contain the dust (optional)
5$ for 4 GA ground wire and bolts

Do you have to replace the block every so often? Will it keep existing rust spots from getting bigger?

I'm guessing once the Zinc block gets pretty rusty, replace it. Shouldn't be very often. I wanna do this too...good DIY!

This totally works. Studied this in college chemistry, and then did it to my truck. I ended up with a 15-year old rust-free toyota pickup. That never happens.

Look up cathode/anode in a chemistry book for more info, then do as Civic Type Sev said. This is used in marine applications to keep iron engine blocks/heads from rusting from the salts in the air/water, and the parts are already available very inexpensively. Don't buy expensive electronic devices that require power, the Zinc block works just fine.

All you do is connect a wire from the zinc block to the chassis? That's all?
