Small filters??
those are pcv by-pass filters they allow crankcase gasses (HC's) to vent out of your motor, Don't have them on there when you smog the vehicle it will fail the visual. It also helps reduce excessive crankcase pressure. Which causes sludge and seal failure. You can run a hose from the valve cover to the intake (filter to filter) and you will increase gas (HC's) flow.
check out the pic from my car...without the filter (universal air breather) you connect the cranck case to the cai. The universal air breathers are pretty useless and I'm not sure what the guys at the smog stations are gonna think of it. Prevents you from reburning gas as far as I know.
the benifit of connecting them is gasses would be sucked out of the motor and burned, the way you have it now the gasses just breath out. The best way it to do it is make use of a pcv valve. A pcv valve does two things it won't allow liquid gasses from entering your throttle body gumming it up, and if your motor back fires it does'nt allow the backfire to travel into your valve cover (possiable but not likely ) which could cause a fire
