Noob exhaust questions
I've got a few questions about mufflers. First off, i know a cat back exhaust would be far better in terms of performance, but is it strongly advised not to just go with a muffler right now cuz its cheaper? Also, if i were to get just a muffler right now, how easy would it be to use that same muffler and change the cat and the downpipe at some later time?
Lastly, can anyone do a rating scale on mufflers? I know GReddy, A'Pexi and Tanabe among others, but can u rank a bunch in terms of how good they are? And are there any cheap-ass brands (ala ebay) that still work alrite? I dont wanna sound like a lawnmower, but i dont wanna sound like a dentist drill - ricer either. so that, and decent performance, are issues. Thanks all.

It's really hard to describe the sound of different mufflers or systems. Everyone has a different idea of the sound and what might be "buzzy" to one person is "deep" to another. I would suggest to stop by your local import shop to hear them in person.
Usually Greddy is mellow, and deep.

There is always the Es Oval muffler that they sell on Jdmhondaparts.com . I have heard that a couple of times and it sounds pretty good . Also it is only $99 so you could do that and some custom 2.25 piping for half of a cat back system.

I hope you realize that there are virtually no performance gains to just adding a straight-through muffler. If you plan on using the stock piping, it will be just for show. Most of these systems usually end up sounding very "buzzy."
You should save up until you can afford to buy one (complete cat-back) or have one made.

Thanks kai, thats pretty much what i was afraid of. how difficult would it be to add the cat back later after addition of a muffler now?
Technodigifreak, that did sound alrite, but I listened to the RSX, (though basically a ricer to begin with) and i felt that it was a little too ricey for me. More of a WEEEEEEEE than a PURRRRRRRRR, if u get me.
Anyone know of any other sites with sound clips?
Keep the rankings coming.

To fit the muffler now, you would need some kind of adapter to fit the tiny stock pipe into the bigger inlet of the aftermarket muffler. This will be welded on. When the time comes to change the piping, the muffler will have to be cut off and rewelded to the new pipe.
I say, if you are concerned about price, buy a good muffler now. Save up for a while until you can afford to have the piping made. Once you have all your money together, go and have it done. This will save you labour costs now, and you will be much happier in the end with a custom cat-back with a muffler of your choice.
