Easiest mod to do is the cluster swap.

No, it's a way for them to charge more for higher model cars. It also costs less to make one wiring harness than it does several for different models - that's why they're all wired to handle the different clusters.
You have to remove the plastic piece around the cluster and to the right where your center vents are. You do this by removing the 2 screws the are screwed in vertically just in front of the cluster. There's another one under the emergency flasher button.
Once you have these removed, you can pull the whole plastic piece off. Start by putting your fingers behind it right where the cluster is (on the right side of the opening). Once you have the right side pulled out the rest should come out pretty easily. You will need to unplug the wire that is plugged into the eliminator where your clock would be (just above the emergency flasher switch). Just remember not to force it and be patient with it or you will break it.
With that piece removed, there are now 4 screws that hold your cluster in. Remove these and you will see how the cluster is wired in - by 2 plugs on either side and a yellow one in the lower-center (for SRS). Remove these and plug your new cluster in.
Reverse the process to get it all back together and you now have a tach.
