Default speedo question

A guy I know is having problems with his speedo. It work sometimes and other times it doesn't. I think it's the speed sensor, but it could be the speedo itself couldn't it?

I just don't want to tell him to go buy something if that's not the right part.

Comments?
Thanks!

that's the one on the differential housing right? Not the one underneath that screws into the houseing.

The one with the 3 wires coming out of it.. right?
