Ok... I have a question to add to this... I too have the same problem in my Civic... I have to press down the clutch, hold it down for about 4 seconds, and then it goes into reverse no problem, just like trowing it in 5th and then dropping it down. My car has 130K on it... does this mean that my tranny's shot? What does this mean for the clutch too? Shifting from gear to gear it doesn't seem like it releases high... any added info would be appreciated.

Routine grinding can indicate a failure of the clutch to completely disengage ("dragging") which will cause the reverse gear to grind much more frequently.
