Default Is "Honda" DOT3 a must?

I've got a '99 Honda Civic LX. The owner's manual says to use the original "Honda" brake fluid. Is this a MUST? If so, why?

Much appreciated!

No it's not. I've been using Valvoline Synpower fluid for almost 2 years now.

I've been using DOT3 fluid from a parts store in my '92 hybird for a couple of years. Goldweaver I think it's call, big black bottle costs about 3.99. Seeya.
