what tranny oil can i use besides MTF?
I'm replacing my axels today on my 96 DX w/ 5 speed, and i'm assuming some of my MTF will leak out when I pull the axels. Problem is, honda parts dept isn't open on sundays so I can't buy more MTF and I work tomorrow morning. So i'm wondering whats safe to put in? I'm thinking of maybe trying to catch the MTF in a clean container and put it back in, since I replaced it less than 15,000 miles ago, it's still fairly new. I've heard people putting 5w30 in, but that makes me a little nervous. What about Synthetic oil, is there a good synthetic I can put in that Napa or Autozone might carry? Also does anyone remember off hand how much the tranny holds? Thanks.
I use 5w30...or was it 10w...I can't remember for sure. Either way, it regular motor oil. Although before winter I'm gonna get some Honda stuff to add top it, I can't remember what it's called, but it helps the oil stick to the gears better.

I think if you read the owners manual it says 10w-40

5w30 works great in the winter. 10w40 is great in the summer. The only thing with winter is that the heavier oil gets stiff, and shiting is harder...
DO NOT use synthetic oil in your manual honda tranny! It's too slippery for the syncros to catch - you will often find that 1 to 2 will grind at higher revs. The honda stuff is the best to use IMO.
