Default cat back vs. muffler

alright im new 2 this but im going to buy either a full cat back or just a muffler for my 98 4door civic. now people are in one ear telling me just get a muffler and people are in the other sayin get a cat back. but then they say a cat back might lose me horse power..then they say a muffler dont do shit 4 my car but make it sound good...will someone please give me an honest opinion on what would be better

wow, never talk to these people ever again...

Get a full cat, it will not loose power, maybe gain 3-4. With a muffler, you will make noice, nothing but noice...

yeah, if i were you id start talking to people who actually know stuff about cars. get most of your info from here. ask questions, search, etc. dont get you info from magazines and other people, unless they actually understand cars. dont get me wrong, i look at magazines all the time. i just dont use them as a source or information, i just look at the pics and occasionally get a good laugh out of some of the cars in them.

also, go with the full catback. or at the least custom piping with a good muffler.

if you find a nice muffler (look/sound) and its only available as the muffler.. then just add some custom mandrel bent 2.25" piping to the equation.. chances are its cheaper and performs the same.. mind does (magnaflow oval-style muffler)

is your sedan auto or stick?

if its auto, I suggest not getting exhaust work, but thats my opinion.

I have a catback (2.25") with a magnaflow muffler and I love it. You do get more power, but its not enough that you even can tell any difference. Maybe 5hp at the most.

I did universal muffler and custom piping - it's nice, although as mentioned above the gains won't be thunderous. 5-10hp max, if you've been saving your 4-leaf clovers...
