need help! LX and EX auto transmissions?

My buddy has a 94 civic ex with auto trans. The transmission went out and he found a LX transmission. Will it work? what would the difference be?

I believe the gearing is taller on non-VTECs. I'm sure he can find an auto EX tranny fairly easily.
