Default *PiCs*My ugly civic and shaving of side moldings *PiCs*

Well. here is my triple (quadruple?) colored civic.

Got in an accident a while back. Got the car all straightened up, but never painted. Saving up for a full paint job inside and out.

Shaving a few things. Like my side moldings, and the antenna.

It's ugly but fun.

Here are some pics for the hell of it.

I'm thinking about doing a Shaving side moldings How-To. Don't know yet.

Pics:

Start of sanding, get down to the metal:

Fiberglassed my fingers together cause I had no gloves. Works wonders for you lungs too

Here we are in the middle. Pink is for bondo.

Passenger side. A bit more sloppy.

Errr.. EG6 wing, and J's racing pillar bar.

ummm hmmm...

clean

Shaved side molding cost $40. First time shaving side moldings ain't too bad; I guess.

yeah i got forced into it with my friend (shaving side moldings).

plus civic's look much better without the side moldings.

the pillar bar is cool... i did notice a bit more rigidy since it's the only bar i have in the back other than my sway bar (or it's my brain playing tricks on me). i've also got a benen bar sitting at my house to put on...

Bumnah, so all you used was fiberglass and bondo? In a long run wouldn't that make the paint look wavy? I mean don't professionals weld on a plate before they use bondo or fiberglass? Have any pics of ur finished results?

Not bad man. Our cars are a like exept mine isn't covered in primer and bondo...yet. The clear coat is just screwed up and the hood is badly chipped and pitted (excuse to get a cf one )

I like the shaved moldings on your car but I wouldn't have them on mine. Scared someone might open there door and dent mine, maybe later tho.

I got the lower tie bar. I don't know how effective the strong bar will be, but I've never tried it so I don't know. I don't think the Strong bar is suppose to be performance related. I'm not completely sure but I think you are suppose to use it if you removed your rear inforcement bar.

Not sure though.

hell no, i'm getting a completely different color inside and out. As much as paint it's gonna cost to get the car painted inside and out, I'm not gonna try to look stock.

Nope never found a good price on jdm folding mirrors, I may get them but I'm thinking it's better to buy spoon or vision mirrors. Since used JDM foldings mirrors are running close to the same damn price! Don't know, it's not high on my priority list. I doubt I'm willing to pay $300 for spoon or vision mirrors. Too. So a hook up in def. in order >=]

I've also got a 91 Jetta GL. It's puke blue in color with a hint of red. Solid motor though. The hatch will soon be parked. I'll try to finish as much as possible this weekend if not I'm gonna primer it up and get back to it in a couple weeks. I'm not in any hurry.

Yeah some people do weld in plates. I don't have welding tools. So I fiberglassed. I actually started work on the passenger side in the middle of december. Never finished so I just primered it up till I had a chance to get back to it. The parts we did finish up on that looked the same. We are pretty much used more fiberglass than bondo on the passenger side. The driver side we tried more bondo than fiberglass... No wavy ness so far. We fiberglassed the first layer so we made sure the holes were coverd up. Water and moisture would get in from those holes so that'd rott the bondo and I could see wavyness happening if the holes weren't covered up. But for the last 6 months it's held up find. Haven't really been worried about it.
I've spoken to a few body shop guys lots of people have done shaved side moldings in different way.

Some guys do weld their lines in. I also know a guys who cut cardboard to the exact size of the side moldings, and dipped in fiberglass resin to and shave his side moldings that way. My body shop guy shaves side moldings by using something called liquid metal. Which is like bondo, just a harder. He swears by it.
So there are lots of way of doing it.

I think it'll be fine.

I used to think the side moldings were really helping. But one day I looked at my door and it was all dinged up. It was so bad I had to get both of my door skins replaced. Cause to fix all the dings my whole door would've been bondo'd up. Not a big fan of bondo even though it's my best friend right now. Anyways I really don't think the side moldings do much. I think they are just too low to really be any good. Just my opinion though.

Rather have 'em shaved. Look helluva a lot better.
