has anybody ever driven another car that has a vtec like system? just wondering if it feels and sounds the same when the "vtec like" system kicks in. like mivec from mitsus and vvti from toys and zetec from ford.

I work at a Pontiac dealer and have driven a few of the vibes with vvti, and test drove a vibe gt with vvtli and they are pretty similar to the vtec. The toyota motor though seems to take an eternity to kick in, even more so than with vtec, especially the gt but the sound is a little more subtle. The gt is a pretty quick car for its size.

This thread has gone to hell in a handbasket.....

It was a pretty stupid question to begin with.. do your homework before you ask questions and post answers.

Why do you own the car if you don't even know what you're looking at when you open the hood? h:

Ford had variable valve timing on the exhaust cam on the Zetec engines in the Escort ZX2 – it did nothing for performance; it was strictly for emissions puroposes. It was dropped for the Focus.
