Default cleaning engine with what?

I was planning on cleaning my car engine. What are those black dirt specs on the engine, and metal parts, mainly like on the distributor and the valve cover. I tried using engine degreasers, cleaners and scrubbing off the dirt marks, but they are really stubborn. My friend bought her car recently, and her engine is super clean. What did they use, or did they steam clean it? Where can I get a steam cleaner, or is there a different route..ho much does it usually cost?

Good question. I was actually cleaning my engine bay last night. What I used was this new Grease Lightening shop\degreaser. Cant remember the name of it but its orange and it works REALLY well. It almost looks like I got in the bay with a buffer and some good wax. So get a bottle of this and go to town.

those are just degreaser. I've tried a few different degreaser, but all the get rid of is the "grease"..lol. well anyways what about those spots on the engine. I'm not sure if you guys know what I'm talking about. They look like stains, or dirt marks that stays on the metal parts after awhile. Cant get rid of those with the degreaser.

Yea started cleaning the engine tonight around the headers and damn its hard work. I've heard WD-40 is great but didn't have ne so I had to scrub REALLY hard with the degreaser.

For those brown spots (around the exhaust manifold) my friend used brake cleaner and a little tooth brush. Didnt get it out completely but got some of it off.

i usually bag the intake filter to prevent it from getting wet and breather filters then spray the cheap **** from autozone or any auto store and it gets all the grease off very nicely then using the hose i just hose it off and let air dry for while, then start up the car and the engines heat will evaporate any water hidden
