The Si came in dead last in the $20k showdown in the latest SCC. That test is comparing cars all in stock form though, and it seems that the Si has the most potential for improvement.

I would take the Mazdaspeed Protege. It already handles like a dream as it is, so you can go straight to work on making it faster.

The Tiburon is a very nice looking car, indeed. It helps when you get help from Pininfarina in designing it. Hyundai seems to have really improved the quality of their cars in recent years, but I still wouldn't consider buying one for at least another generation.

I like the SE-R, and it's a great car for the money, but it seems kinda bulky to me, and personally I'm just a fan of small and agile.

Umm... Focus? I think I saw in the news or somewhere last week that the Focus has had more recalls than any other car in history. There's a record I wouldn't be looking to break.

man tell him to think for himself..seems a lot of people like to spark this discussion thats masked as a question.. and if he is buying a car for speed look for speed. theres lots of other options then those. i owned an SI and recently got rid of it... it was a good car, but i prefer taking somethin and building it up. so i bought an older gen civic.. itll be fun...so really if u want to know anything specific about the SI ill be happy to answer, but to get into comparison wars is a futile way to buy.

Yeah, I think the Si has the most potential out of all of the them. Also was at the bookstore today, the newest HCI (some tuner magazine) claimed that alot of mfrs are reluctant to develop for the new Si because it hasn't been selling well. However, out of all of them I see the Si having the most backing. Compared to the number of Civic parts, there's only a handful (if you look hard!) for the current Protege and Sentra. And its still too early to call for the Tiburon, but I suspect the availability of aftermarket support, while its growing, will be small for Hyundais as well.

watever SCC said about the si or any of the other cars, dont listen to them. they dont know sh*t about cars. i am an 02 si owner and im happy with it but if i had a choice i would have kept my 97 4dr civic and drop a b18c5 motor. if you want more opinions, go to www.ephatch.com and look around. as for performance, the k20 motors have alot of potential. some guy with an 02 si with i/h/e ran constant 15.0 and i think a best of 14.8. but he is probably a damn good driver. go to that website and you can find his timeslips in the dragracing forum.

Isn't the SE-R weaker than Nissan rates it? I remember reading in an SCC a long time ago that it put out some lower than expected numbers when they dynoed it. This was a long time ago though and I haven't been keeping up. Did Nissan fix the problem?

I do not doubt it. They claim 180 hp...yet the car seems so bulky and heavy looking.
