Default Side splitters

Are they the new craze? I've been seeing them on cars all over the damn place. What exactly do they do? Any comments are welcome.

Whatever it is, it's ugly and stoopid.

Well, I don't actually know if it's stupid; but it's sure ugly.

They're called canards. Their purpose is to add downforce to the front of the car. Unless you frequent roadcourses, or drive at triple-digit speeds often, theyprobably wouldn't serve much of a practical purpose on a street car. Well, they would look kinda neat. I guess that's enough of a purpose.

I have seen them where they are metal wings that go on the front of the bumpers. I'll see if i can find a pic.
