Default 96 civic gear shifter problem

my friend has a 96 civic when he starts the car, the car will somehow shift into reverse by itself but then will not allow the car to shift into any other gears. Its like the shifter is stuck. Anyone know what the problem might be?

happened to me.... turned out to be the clutch... probably should replace all of the tranny seals too when u do it... but after the new clutch was in it wasnt too bad... just didnt change my tranny seals so it slipped out of fifth on me once... so make sure everything gets done right the first time so u dont have to go back to where it was done or pull apart the tranny again.

maybe if you actually read what I wrote, I did answer his question. How did it not make sense, well tranny seals aren't gonna make your shit slip out of fifth for one thing, that coupled with your general lack in any knowledge would pretty much make me worry about everybody elses posts that don't help nor contribute any real knowledge to the thread. Thanks for playing though.

ok, soooo that still doesn't tell me why you had a fifth gear issue due to seals. I would love to tell you what was the problem. I use actual tactics involving physical diagnosis to solve problems, not just shoot out random maybe answers onto the internet. If you want to ship me your trans or if you were more local I would be happy to figure out any problem you are having. I just hate it when people throw out "answers" to a question that has about 23048230948 facts and figures missing from it in the first place. The reason it won't come out of reverse could be as silly as some dickhead doesnt know about the button you have to push to shift it. I wasn't trying to make an attack on you, but more so the fact that I am seeing way too many people on here lately just throwing out answers to questions without getting more information as to the nature of the problem.
