Default Thinking of a used Del Sol - what to look for ?

Hi Guys,

I have been a Chrysler owner for the last 15 years and now that the PT is pretty much done paying for I am thinking of getting me a fun to drive in the sun car as a summer only vehicle.

since Miata owners are nuts (way too expensive for a used car), I started looking at alternatives.
Seeing a Del Sol on the street the other day reminded me of the little car I couldn't afford when it was new and I wasn't so well off.
I am not rich by any means but I love to drive and could afford another car if I found a good deal.

So this is what I'm looking for:
a stick shift: this is not negociable!,
an open top car,
preferably small: a two seater would suit me just fine,
as stock as possible so I can correct what I don't like but otherwise leave it alone,
in a Del Sol the VTEC model would be appreciated for the additional revs and hp UNLESS you tell me I should stay away AND why.

So far in what very few researches I have made I have spotted those:

http://www.lespac.com/search/detail.php?a=5907215

Got any information on how to tell different models apart, please do tell.
Also any and all help is much appreciated.

Thank you.

I don't know exactly.... between five to seven grand.
Depends on the deal I can find.
If I go any higher the Miata comes back into play as there are some in the ten to eleven thousand range but I don't want to go that expensive for a car I'd use about four/five months a year.

solsociety.com

good forum for the sols and your bound to find one for sale near you. The biggest thing to look out for on the sols is the roof seal, you will want to make sure its in good shape as its a pricey peice to need to replace.

for 5-7 grand, you can get a pretty decent car.you could probably find a mint integra for that much. im just not a del sol fan...the look like they have a pig face. or, you could find a turbo mr2 for that much..or a 300zx. i don't know, if i could do it all over again, i would have started with a rwd or awd car.

i just noticed you were from canada. is it possible for you to get your hands on imported cars? im not sure about the legalities of Quebec when it comes to importing vehicles.

Importing is possible but takes some work and saves you some money but it's also harder to know exactly what you will end up with, just as buying any other car from a distance.

Five to seven grand won't get me as far here as it would for you across the border but RWD is definitely coming back to haunt me (first car was RWD) and although I have always liked the DelSol and appreciate the help I got here, I think I will spend a little more and find me a used Miata.
I fear I will regret it too much if I don't get one now that I have the opportunity to as I have liked them ever since they came out in 1990 and have always had a big stupid grin on my face whenever I get to drive the one my boss owns.

So thank you all for your help and replies and enjoy your car and the sun as much as you can.

im not a big miata fan, mostly because i cant fit in one. they handle really well on the track, hell, scca has an entire division for the miata. Or, you can always swap in a 302 and build that. nothing like v8 in a car less then 2500lbs

Surprisingly, despite being 6'0" and 175-180lbs I feel very comfortable in them.
It'll end up costing me more money 'cause they aren't as affordable used as the DelSol but if I'm going to spoil myself and get a second car as a "toy", I might as well get what I have been longing for for a long time.

A 302 ... Sure a Monster Miata sounds fun but it would also break the bank !
I'm more likely to end up with an original silverstone colored, first generation, supercharged Miata I have been offered for a decent price by this guy who has had it since new.
Maybe... *crosses fingers*
