99 Civic Si Idle Problems
Hello,
I recently purchased a Honda Civic Si with an LS/VTEC motor in it. I found out that after putting gas in it, I'll try to turn it on and it won't start up until I put my foot on the gas. After it starts it won't idle by itself, I have to keep my foot on the gas for about 20-30 seconds. I also get terrible gas milage. Could these 2 problems be related somehow? I'd really like some advice because filling it up with premium every 3 days is really not cheap. LOL.
I'd really appreciate it if you could help.
Thanks,
Derek

If it's only stalling when the engine isn't up to temp. it sounds like FITV (fast idle thermo valve). Otherwise, if it does it even when warm, could be the IACV (idle air control valve).
If it runs relatively well (despite poor mpg), there's a good chance that's where you need to look.

So when I bought this car, they told me it had a GSR motor with a B16 head. I took it to a friend of mine and he told me it was an LS/VTEC because it had oil lines coming out of it that a GSR doesn't use. Well the block number have been ground of (prolly hot) but the block still had a VIN on it. I ran the number through Carfax and it came back as a 1997 Acura Integra RS motor. Does that mean it is an LS/VTEC or what?

The RS would be non-VTEC, so if it now has a VTEC head then yes. The engine in the RS was the same (or very similar) as that in the LS Integra.
Some people even refer to a D16 block w/ a B16 head as an LS/VTEC(Not me though :hsugh, just b/c it's the same idea.

Just look at your block for the block number. If it says B18B, its an LS. If it says B18C1, its from a GSR (which means you could possibly have VTEC depending on the head). Another easy way is to look at the valve cover. Vtec valve covers usually say honda and under it, it says DOHC. If not than u probably have a plain LS motor. I could be wrong, but thats how I see it.
If you have a hard time figuring out whether its a LS/Vtec look at these pictures.
If your valve cover looks like this:

than it is vtec.
But if it looks like this:

than it has no vtec whatsoever.
Correct me again but like I said, that is how i see it
