axle reinstallation question
Hi all,
I am having one heck of a time trying to reinstall the driver side axle back into the trans. It looks like there is a little 'set ring' or 'retainer clip'? at the tip of the axle shaft that goes into the trans...this is somehow blocking and without it, it goes right in.
I looked at this closely and the ring seems to be loosely sitting on the shaft..
I replaced this axle some 4 yrs ago and didn't pay attention to how it looked like before....
My question is, what exactly is the purpose of having this ring or clip? Just to hold the shaft in place in the trans? Can one do without it?
I tried to get a new one from the dealer and it's a special order part. I can find one in a cv boot kit elsewhere...
Thanks.

Had the same prob on my 94 civic. take the ring off and compare it to the old ring on the old shaft. i had to reduce the thickness of the ring. slide the ring across some fine grit sandpaper flatwise and shave it down . should fit right in.
Thanks for your replies. This is the old shaft that I am reinstalling after I swapped out the clutch...and I can't believe just this part is taking as long as putting the trans back...The passenger-side shaft went in without problems after a few struggling slam..
Funny thing is the honda dealers laughed at me when I asked for this special order part...they said nobody would replace this part as it does not wear out...but the Haynes manual and the Honda Service manual do suggest replacing this set ring though...
The same thing happened when I asked for the spring pin at the shift rod....you know, the one you punch out and then the shift rod separates from the trans...
