Speedo it TRIPPIN!
Ok, so i'm going down the highway and my speedo goes to 0 and then back to 80 and so forth. Then it goes to zero and just stays there. Then the check engine light comes on...... What gives....
I've already replaced the VSS 2 times so that can't be it. Any clues... I can't stand limp mode because it seems like the vtec won't kick in... or it's slow or something.

I have the same problem....seems to be only when it rains though :dunno:...so I am thinking for me its a short somewhere ....then my car will sputter sometimes at around 3k.....it happens every once in a blue moon so I don't even mess with it
lemme know if you figure out what the problem is

the VSS is known to go out on hondas very often.. 99.6% of the time the sensor jus craps out... find a local junk yard and replace it... dont matter 0bd1 or obd2 sohc or dohc all compatible..

If you pull the code and it's a VSS, then it's the VSS. If it's something else, remove and re-install the gauge cluster, and see if that makes a difference. The connections are electrical, and vibration can affect them over time because they don't click and lock into place. I'll agree that a CEL doesn't make any sense for this sort of fix because a loose gauge cluster doesn't cause a CEL. But other than the VSS or a loose speedo connection, I don't know what would make your speedo act like that.
yeah, man but my beef with it is that whenever it happens the cel comes on and from what i've read vtec won't kick in with the cel on..... am i right on this?? It just feels like limp mode when the light is on.
yep. you're correct.
If it's really infrequent that it happens, just pull your backup fuse or negative battery cable for 5 minutes and reset it. But get the code checked and see what it is.
