Default Should the inside of my civic's motor look like this?!?!

Before I tighten everything back up...should my civic motor look like this?

When I did the TB install on my teg it had 95k and the inside was very clean very check it out

ive had the car about 20,000miles and ive done oil changes every 3-4k.
it currently has 150k on her.
but i smell a "burnt" smell. cant tell if its coming form the oil or the valve cover gasket. that smells too.

anything i can/should do.

or

just put it back together

thanks

looks to have a few metal shavings in there & some particles, but basicly just looks like that car just wasn't maintained as well as your other one. Oil changes probly wern't done regularly. It's ok buti would just make sure to run some good oil in it.

naw, just keep up with the maintenance and keep in mind that this will be a commuter-only motor until it dies.

That looks like a Pennzoil motor. If you are using Pennzoil, do your car a huge favor and switch.

+2 Was going to mention that myself.

I'm no expert on oil though, only what I've heard.

My '92 w/ 130k actually looks worse

I put it down to a combination of less-than-great oil (at least some of which was pennzoil), long change intervals, and the fact that the cooling system wasn't properly maintained. (Hotter it gets the faster the oil breaks down)

My thermoswitch took forever to finally kick the fan on since I first got it, more than a year before it completely stopped working. Who knows how many years it let the engine get warmer than it was supposed to before the fan came on.
That, and the coolant looked really old, I feel lucky that the rad. and gaskets don't leak.

I'd try to stay away from the 5min. flush products myself. I've used milder leave-in detergents in my motor several times now. After one use there no longer appeared to be sludge formation on the dipstick (:ugh I used CD-2 Max a few times (though I now know that it swells seals) and now I have Rislone engine formula (or something) in there - it's actually blue - and after about 1000 miles I'm just starting to see some of the varnish being reduced under the valve cover. The Mobil1 Extended Performance (extra detergents) may have a little to do with that also, been in there for 3k.

alot of oils have a high parafin content, penzoil is well known for having one of the highest contents of parafin. It's a slip additive, but builds up alot over time.
