Oil recommendation?
 

What kind of oil should I consider for a 99 Civic LX with 85,000 miles? Synthetic? I do a lot of city driving and the winter temps here can go below 0f often but the weather right now can still hit 90 or so. I'll be driving till the end of september then putting the car away untill december-jan, then getting it out in may again.

Synthetic Oil is good enough for me, I change it every 7.5K miles on a Honda Civic with 90K miles on the motor:) !!!

I run Royal Purple in all my vehicles.

if your car is running with dino oil now...stick with it. change/adjust the oil viscosity for your weather/driving needs.

I run Amsoil or Royal Purple. I change filter every 5000 miles and oil every 10k miles.

I've done quite a bit of research on oils and the main thing is, change it. Having said that, I use synthetic. It is not true that switching to synthetic will cause an engine to leak excessive oil, unless there were other problems in the engine such as sludge covering up a bad seal. I have switched over several used cars with over 200k on them and didn't have leak problems. Synthetic has several advantages, such as increased service intervals, a slight increase in fuel mileage, and higher temperatures before the oil breaks down.

I started my '92 on synthetic w/ 120k on it and at first it used more oil than normal but after a while it seems to have gotten used to it :hsdunno:

Previously w/ the dino in there it took 1/2 bottle of seal conditioner to stop the small amount of oil use.
I stopped using that to see if the consumption came back and it did, I then switched to the synthetic and added the seal conditioner again but it continued using oil at a faster than normal rate, even after adding the other 1/2 bottle of conditioner.

Finally, after about 2000 miles the oil use has slowed to almost nothing so I'll continue to use synthetic for the improved mileage, smoother idle, and extended service intervals.

I've heard that Mobil 1, maybe just some kinds(I've got Extended Performance in there now), will tend to result in more oil consumption but until I try Castrol Syntec on my next change I can't say for sure.
