Bad Oxygen Sensor?
replacing an o2s is dirt easy, simply follow what fdavie said.
But if it was a bad 02 sensor engine would still run decently in open loop mode, and you would have a check engine light, my sensor went bad at about 100k miles and the ecu shot me the P0133 which is a slow o2 sensor responce, meaning its not keeping up and its failing. However theres other things o2 sensors can do to cause an abnormal condition to set other DTC's in the computer.
I would look at the MAP sensor, TPS sensor, distributor and the coil, fuel pump, or in a few rare cases, ECU could be having hickups.
Edit: forgot one more thing, idle control valve too, they can misbehave and cause strange RPM jumps and drops.

Just to be clear, when the rpms jump can you hear the engine doing that? Do you feel a surge, etc. if it's in gear/drive?
I'm thinking it might just be the tach acting up :hsdunno: I mean, if you rpms were actually reading zero the engine would stall...
Anyway, if it is in fact the tach acting on it's own without relation to what the engine's doing, I'd first check all your grounds to make sure they're clean & tight (I sound like a broken record).

Hopefully the new sensor did in fact fix the problem
( :surprised: )

If you haven't bought your new O2 sensor yet a good place to order them is www.sparkplugs.com check them out and compare to your other sources. Unless you like soldering wires I suggest buying the direct replacements (not universal).
Yea ive looked at parts stores around here and they have the universal for like $70-$75 and the oem part for like around $200. If anyone knows where I can get the direct replacement part for a reasonable price please let me know!!!!!! Thanks for the replies and the help its much appreciated!
