Default Should I get this Civic

1995 Civic DX

1.5L SOHC with 5-speed with 198k miles.
Has hood damage, but he's including a new primered hood that he ordered.

Car is red and the rest of the body is pretty good. I haven't seen the interior, but I'm told it's clean.

edit:// its the coupe!

all for $1500 and he says he'll negotiate. He has another car already, so I'm sure if I show him $1000 cash he'll say okay.

What do you all think?

inspect thoroughly for rust in the rear quarter panels, if its really bad then im not sure if its worth it, but a lil wont hurt for that price...thats the biggest issue...and check for any electrical problems (i.e. lights working and such) they are a headache

Didn't buy it. Needed too much work. Someone is offering me a Ford Escort ZX2 to boot.

Is it normal for a DX not to have power steering?

Yeah, the DX models didn't come with Power steering...
Or a Tachometer, 4-wheel disc brakes (front discs are smaller diameter too), wheel covers, power options etc...

The rust in the rear quarter panels is not nearly as much a problem on DX models as EX/LX models, as DX's didn't come with a sunroof, and therefore there are no drain tubes going into the rear quarter panel area to contribute to rusting...

walk up with $1000 in cash. $800 in left pocket and $200 in right.

offer him the $800. see if he bites. if not. then see if you can borrow some from your buddy and come up with the "borrowed" $200

he'll bite. $ talks

What's wrong with a Ford Escort Zx2? They have a DOHC 2.0 2.0L Mazda engine and tranny at 130hp, it had more balls than my 95 Civic EX did. parts for the ford were cheaper too.

Not trying to start a flame war here, don't get me wrong, I loved my Civic. It was cool and they both looked were styled pretty well. Although the Ford is lacking in build quality, it doesn't lack power. It had the perfect trade off of power and fuel economy. It got 30mpg in town with the 5-speed.

IMHO: the 2.0 Zetec is one of the best engines I've ever been behind. I didn't really get to experience my Honda's VTEC because it was auto.

Again, I'm not trying to start a flame war. I'm just wondering what you guys don't like about them.

I don't like the build quality at all, and as the car gets older you will only find more and more problems. My ex-gf had one and I think by the time it hit 80k miles it was in the shop more than she was able to drive it. She finally got rid of it for next to nothing just to skip out on having to pay for the up keep on it. I also had a buddy in high school with the same problem. I have never heard anything good about them except for the 2.0 Zetec which they carried over to the focus. I would rather drive my 1987 accord than a zx2 for reliability and maint.

My previous ZX2 had 182K miles on the clock and could still whoop some ass. Pulled hard!
