I agree; this is an acceptable method. As long as you don't rush through, it should work well enough.

Also, the only way way you'll damage a piston is if you, for some reason, decide to "tap" in the metal rod with a sledgehammer.

Yes, I understand that. I agree with you. Maybe you know what you are doing, but someone who does not have as much experience may not...

According to my repair manual, and my bro, who is a certified mechanic, it is supposed to be done without a metal rod.

I've never used one, and I've timed many engines.
