Default Nitrous Laws

hey guys, i have been doing some searching on the web for laws about nitrous to find out the legalities. I had a cop question me about it a couple weeks ago & i told him that the bottle was empty & that it was for show & that i was on my way back from a car show that was down the street. I'm just curious as to what the laws actually are. When i installed the nitrous system 3 years ago, i was told that it was legal to have, as long as it wasn't being used on the street. Does anyone know what the current laws are. It may be by state & i might have to call the state highway patrol to find out but i figured i would make a thread so that everyone else was aware of the laws as well.

Virginia law states no bottles installed in the car when its on the street. No if's and's or but's. Theyre strict here in Northern VA outside DC.

Furthermore technically VA state law prohibits any modifications other than those made by the manufacturer or dealer to correct a manufacturer defect or resolve a problem. In other words anything that didnt come on the car at date of manufacture is illegal here. Its essentially up to how harda$$ the cop wants to be.

That's exactly how it is here. Usually cops tell us to keep our cars quiet and on the DL and they'll be cool about it. Then there is always one that will go out of his way to "serve and protect" by being a dick.
