Default 3 stage vtec

Gurus,

If you were to swap in a d15b vtec, and you came across a 3 stage vtec head w/solenoid and proper ECU, would you do it, or not bother? Bolt right up?

Perform less than the d15b vtec?

I did a search, but couldn't find anything.

Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, there were a few versions of the d15b, one of which was a 3 stage VTEC and OBD 2. The OBD 1 version was a single stage VTEC and was comparable to that of a d16z6, with a more aggressive cam. What is the engine code for this "3 stage VTEC head" you found?

you'd need the correct ECU to run the "3 Stage" VTEC found in the D15B's.

It's from a 96-00 OBD 2. I don't know the code off the head yet.

ECU #'s
37820-P2J-J62
947-103949

Sound like the right one?

Bet I'd have some wiring to upgrade. Not worth the headache? Might be able to get it cheap, but may cost more in the long run? :hs:

If it were me, it is more things to break on the engine, less aprts means less things to break. I mean if the 3 Stage VTEC was that great why wouldn't they keep making it? They stopped making it for a reason. Just my 2 Cents. IF you want it just to say you have 3 stage VTEC I say go for it then.

3 stage VTEC is a fuel economy package, not performance. You won't be any faster, better, or more amazing than with normal VTEC.

I believe 3 stage Vtec is only found on the VTEC-E engine.
