Default Deciding On A Honda

There is this Honda Civic thats a 1993 at my mom's job. (PTA Thrift Shop). It's not a bad car but when the person donated it to them, he listed that there were certain things wrong with it. #1. It had an Exhaust Valve Problem/Leak. #2. There was no pressure in 1 Cylinder of the Engine. I thought that this wouldn't be too much to fix. What should I do? Go ahead and buy the car and just repair it for a couple hundred bucks, for would it cost more?

First, can you do any work yourself? If you can it could surely save you some money long term.

It's good to know that the donor mentioned it has problems and they could be relatively easy to remedy. For me this raises a red flag because if a problem car was donated...what else is wrong with it? It could end up as a money pit fixing problems here and there as they become apparent. If you have the extra money to back up any other problems that show up, if they do, then it may be a good deal. If you don't have the extra money then I would not recommend it.

Oh, and could this be moved to the right forum. It seems that 'Pre 92 Civic' is overlooked too often.

Sounds like the timing belt broke and the head was damaged......If you got the money buy it and swap the engine

How many miles are on it? How much is the car? No offense but you don't sound like your an experienced mechanic. However, if that is false, or you don't mind learning you might be able to have the head rebuilt or just replace it with another one for fairly cheap. That sounds like 1 obvious problem from what you've told us. You should be able to get a used head for $100-$200. You'll also need a head gasket, Intake Manifold gasket, coolant, etc. Might as well replace the timing belt, waterpump, plugs, oil, filters, while your at it.

There could be many other problems with the car too. If you can get the car for $500 or less, and the rest of it is in decent shape you may want to get it. You can get a running 93 civic in decent shape for about $3K. So its up to you.

Wrong again bro... He originally posted it in the Pre 92 and it was moved probably by Jaje...

Not really safe too assume just cuz somethings in the right place when u see it, that it wasnt moved there prior to that...

As for the question, I probably would try and find another car... Unless you feel confident u can fix it... Otherwise it could cost you more in the long run to buy it and then have fixed as opposed to buying one thats running...

Have it chekced over by a trusted mechanic if you can't do it yourself, then swap the engine out for anothe D series and call it a day.... unless you want some performance then thats a different conversation
