hey my question is what happens to a rim when there is oxidation on it, and what does it do to the rim?? anything bad besides look??

 

what happens to metal when it rusts? what does it do to the metal?

if you didnt understand what i was getitng to.....oxidation is rust. a metal panel is a lot thinner then a chunk of aluminum wheel...so it will take a lot of time before the aluminum gets soft....your clear coat on the wheel will be the first thing to flake off....then pitting.....then discoloration. then you will take it to a polishing shop...and they will charge you 500-1000 bucks for a clean perfect new rim look.

all youhave to do to stop oxidation...is just cleanyour rims....all you have to do is just wipe them. neglect is why the oxidation started.

yes.....it is to late. then only thing you can do is to sand it down...but keep in mind...there is a clear coat on all machined factory rims. to give them a better shine then just plain aluminum. aluminum doesnt shine or have a high luster like other metals. it is like brushing your teeth....just bruce at least daily and you wouldnt have oxidation...dont brush for a week and your teeth will rott.....if you then start brushing daily....your teeth wouldnt get cleaner then they are. im soryr for the lame comparioson...but you get the idea. just wipe them down frequently to stop the corrosion/oxidation

 

Aluminum oxidation is OK. Steel oxidation is bad. Aluminum forms a protective oxide layer that prevents further oxidation, in most cases this prevents aluminum from corroding. Steel, on the other hand, is totally messed up once it oxidizes.

Its a common problem on aluminum wheels take some aluminum polish and get a mothers-buff-ball put it on your drill and shine them up.
