speedometer not working help...
okay just a few weeks ago the speedometer on my honda civic cx hatchback was acting funny.it was going up and down and now its dead.I took the cluster out and check for any loose wire but none and now i'm stuck.please help.
I had that happen a few years ago. The VSS wasn't the cause, I swapped the cluster because I had another. About a year later it bounced again. I was going to swap this cluster with another, but when I was removing my ground strap from the battery it was very oxidized, so I cleaned it up. Fine since.
I haven't tried swapping the original cluster back in to see if it was actually a bad ground because my current one still works fine, so I can't be sure if it was from the ground or not. Just a long winded suggestion I guess.
Short version: clean ground points, check speed sensor, swap cluster.
It could have something to do with the dimmer switch also, seems like everything electrical on the dash is affected by that sucker. Then a couple turns of the dial and it settles down again (third switch).

I have read that others who have seen this problem occur in their cars have actually swapped the circuit board that is a part of the instrument cluster. I am having the same issue with my speedometer right now and am looking for a solution...anyone know if you can order the circuit board separately from the cluster?
I am having a similar problem with my '94 civic. The battery light comes on occasionally and flickers. The speedometer bounces occasionally as well.
What exactly are you referring to by the "ground strap from the battery?" Is this the ground connection on the battery?
I am hoping to resolve this without buying a new speedometer (as the dealer suggested as the problem.)
