Default VAFC question

My son has a mildly built b16b in his eg. He still hasen't upgraded the
cams and I'm wondering if adding a VAFC will help the engine run better/
as in more hp, or is this something that doesn't need to be done until
he ungrades his cams, springs and retainers.

Thanks,

engine:

0.30 overbore
type R pistons / rings
CAI
Skunk 2 IM
d/c ceramic 4/2/1 header
ECU chip upgrade
Engine head re-surfaced
waiting for b16 tranny to arrive, using LS tranny now.

a VAFC is a tuning tool, in essence it will yeild more power, but it wont make any more. You will just be able to take advantage of power you already have that isn't being utilized because of the current state of the motor. Its all in the tune...

I'd recommend Hondata if he wants to work with some engine management.

OT: If it's a B16B why are Type-R pistons listed as a mod?

Depending on what the future plans are, I'd go with something like Hondata, Crome, or Neptune if you plan to continue building it. Good tuning will require a dyno to squeeze the most efficient tune out of the motor though.
