i have a 98 dx civic i picked up for $2500 162K i had to replace the exhaust manifold because the stockers r known to crack by the O2 sensor hole and it did 3 inch crack. i went on ebay got a stainless header for like 60 because a oem was 600 from the honda dealershit. i have a injen C.I.A. i dont know about your emissions but i'd just keep your stock piece around when you take it in for testing get approved , then swap it for you header, yea its time consuming but you'll driving. my buddy blew his sohc v-tec threw a rod has a head sitting around might want to sell it?? i was going to use it and do a mini me mod. ebay has been good to me knock on wood look around for deals sounds like your on a budget like me..later

yea, i looked into doing a mini me swap but it is not legal in cali. also the header has to be carb legal but all the headers are taking the place where i have my cat. unfortunately i had to replace the cat the first week i bought the car to get it to pass smog and get it transfered into my name.....$600+++ so ya.

i wouldent mind a whole exhaust swap if it is legal. but i am not going to drive a n illegally modded car the risk of a really high priced ticket is not worth it.

if i put on one of the headers, can i relocate my cat(-exhaust mani) after the header or get a new cat to bolt on?

if not i guess i am stuck with my car untill i save up like 3 grand for a whole engine swap. any ideas?

Since I think I got moderated for going off-topic with a compliment, I might as well say something helpful and get back in the thread for which I'm getting reminders for.

Relocating the catalytic converter won't work on your car. It's the wrong kind of converter for that. It's physically different, and would not be effective or smog-legal if you hacked it to make it work. You would have to replace your whole exhaust system including the manifold with Honda OEM parts or smog-legal equivalents. Not to mention that there's the whole heated/non-heated o2 sensor issue and getting it to get along with your OBD-II ECU which is expecting a different sensor... It's not worth the expense or trouble on that engine IMO. You won't get much more out of the mods you described on that engine than what you have already.

It sucks you live in Cali. It's easy to do that sort of stuff elsewhere, but not where you live. I don't think it's even legal to replace a known-good catalytic converter there from what I've read. It has to fail first. If you replaced it then you've effectively raised your car's resale value when it comes down to bargaining for $.

If you really want to upgrade your daily driver, you should perhaps consider selling it and buying the car that your ideal swap engine came with. It most likely will be more comfortable, fun to drive, and less hassle than what you're describing... plus it will have more options than the Civic you have. If you have to change something, then just get a more stylish muffler or tip and an intake. You'll hear your new intake more than most exhaust systems anyways, and Honda valvetrains sound really good when they're wound up.

ahh indeed. i forgot about the other o2 sensor, thank you good point. i do like the intake....is it worth it to get "catback" exhaust or just get a muffler and call it quits? i dont think i can really get a true catback system anyways. thanks.

Nope. Stuck with a muffler. You could ebay one for about $40. Get someone to cut your old one off and clamp it on. It might look better and sound a little different... but bigger exhaust pipes won't really help. If you do find a cat-back, it won't do any more good than just a muffler because of restrictions up-stream from it. It would be easier to install, though... and have all the right hangers.
